SE Asia & Asia

Bali
This small island in the Indonesian chain is one of the greatest art centers in the world. It is said that artistic skill is a genetic legacy of its people. The colorful and commanding images of the dance masks of Bali are well known.

The area also produces exotic wood sculptures from the distorted burl laden wood of the chinaberry tree.

Dragons and Hindu gods are among the favored subject matter of these fine artisans.

Dramatic life size sculpture of wildlife is a specialty of some artists. Dolls, puppets, mobiles, flying creatures, boxes, banks and other decorative art abound in the villages of the island.

Bamboo wind chimes provide the distinctive sound of the culture.

Prehistoric ivory and bone sculpture in fine detail are among the most exciting finds in Bali.

The variety and charm of the art of the Balinese cannot be exaggerated.

Java
This country produces teak furniture, often in an interesting overlay of Indonesian over Victorian. Especially delightful are the deep benches and hefty sea chests.

India
India abounds with art. The Hindu religion, rich with deities, lends itself to their powerful expression in bronze. The Buddhists of India as well as the Tibetan refugees produce artifacts such as singing bells and bowls, malas and temple tools. The Narmada river is famous for the beautiful and mysterious tantric lingams which grace Hindu temples as symbols of Shiva.

India now rivals Indonesia in the production of silver jewelry, and China, in the production of inexpensive beads. Rare, Ancient Nepalese and Tibetan beads and jewelry are found in the markets of India and Nepal. Some of these date back 2000 years or more and are thought by some to carry powerful energy along with their rich folk history.

India also abounds with highly decorated functional art, such as boxes, cupboards and chests of drawers. India bells are world famous for their gentle, pure brass sounds. India is the source of the largest variety of incense in the world and the popular Nag Champa is now the most frequently bought incense in the country.

China
China is the greatest producer of gemstone beads and pearls in the world. Beads from China come in mindboggling forms. This country is also the Jade capital of the world and the jewelry and sculpture from this material has been highly prized since ancient times. The Chinese are masters of gemstone carving and now produce most of the gemstone art sold in the world.

China is now the manufacturing site for most of the whimsical resin art collectibles so popular in the USA. Most of the Christmas ornaments and art enjoyed by western Christians is produced in the Asian country.
